Safety Measures Taken At WeHaKee Camp for Girls

At Camp WeHaKee, we understand the importance of entrusting your child to us, and we’re fully committed to creating a safe and secure environment for every camper. Building a trusting relationship with you and your family is at the heart of everything we do. As camp directors, Maggie and Bob, along with our dedicated staff, take a comprehensive approach to ensure the safety of everyone at camp. While we can’t disclose every detail of our safety procedures, here are some key measures we have in place to protect your child throughout their time at Camp WeHaKee:

  1. Controlled Access to Campgrounds
    • Gated Entrance: WeHaKee has a gated main entrance that is closely monitored to prevent unauthorized access.
    • Check-in and Check-out Procedures: Strict procedures ensure we know who’s entering and leaving the camp at all times.
    • Staff Supervision: Our trained staff keep an eye on the campgrounds, quickly reporting any unfamiliar individuals through our two-way radio system.
  2. Thorough Staff
    • Screening and Training
Background Checks: All staff members go through detailed background checks to ensure a safe environment for our campers.
    • Comprehensive Training: Before camp begins, staff receive training on child safety, conflict resolution, and behavior management to maintain both physical and emotional safety for everyone.
    • Emergency Preparedness: Staff are also trained to handle emergencies, including intruder scenarios and wildlife encounters.
  3. Medical Care and Health Services
    • Certified First Aid & CPR: Nearly all staff are trained in first aid, CPR, and AED operation to respond swiftly to medical situations.
    • On-Site Health Center: Our fully equipped health center is staffed by licensed medical professionals, and we are ready to transport campers to nearby facilities for advanced care if necessary.
    • Medication Management: All medications are securely stored and administered by our medical team, following all instructions to ensure proper care.
    • Communicable Disease Prevention: We have a comprehensive plan in place for preventing and managing illness, including pre-screening campers and monitoring health throughout their stay.
  4. Emergency Preparedness and Communication Systems
    • Two-Way Radios: Our staff have easy access to two-way radios for fast communication in any emergency situation.
    • Emergency Notification: We have clear procedures for notifying authorities and parents in case of medical emergencies, severe weather, or other urgent situations.
    • Weather Monitoring: We keep a close eye on the weather, and in the event of a storm, campers can quickly move to our underground storm shelters.
  5. Physical Security Measures
    • Cameras: Security cameras are in place at key points around the camp to ensure safety.
    • Lighting: LED lighting throughout the camp provides visibility for campers moving between cabins and other facilities and helps deter unwanted visitors.
  6. Behavior and Safety Policies
    • Behavioral Expectations: Campers are expected to follow our safety guidelines, and activities like alcohol, drugs, or weapons are strictly prohibited. Serious violations lead to immediate dismissal.
    • Respectful Camp Community: We foster a respectful environment where bullying or threatening behavior is not tolerated, encouraging all campers to feel safe expressing themselves.
  7. Visitor Policies
    • Limited Visitor Access: Visitors must arrange their visit ahead of time and are required to wear visible Visitor name tags.
    • Pick-Up Authorization: Only those authorized by parents or guardians can pick up campers, ensuring no one leaves with an unauthorized person.
  8. Local Authority Partnerships
    • Strong Community Ties: We work closely with the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department and Winter Fire & Rescue to ensure quick response times in any emergency. Routine patrols in our area further enhance our camp’s safety.

At Camp WeHaKee, your child’s safety is our top priority, and we’re dedicated to providing them with a fun, secure, and enriching camp experience.
