What’s SUP? Well, stand-up paddling, of course!
Stand-up paddling (SUP) has been a fun and popular activity for years at Camp WeHaKee! It basically consists of a board (similar to a surfboard) and a paddle (like a canoe, but longer & usually adjustable). And it’s easy for anyone to do. You can sit on the board, you can kneel, and when you’re ready, you can stand. And one of my favorites, you can simply fall off and give it another try!
WeHaKee campers and staff love heading out on the lake with a group of paddle boards. They might choose to race or navigate through a set course, maybe play agility games, or even do yoga. Or they might just group together and hang out in the middle of the lake!
Last summer, WeHaKee added a 10-person paddle board, big enough for a whole cabin group. But regardless of the size of the board or the type of activity they choose, our campers just want to have fun floating and paddlng across the water!
And whether they know it or not, there are some other benefits of SUP at WeHaKee:
Connection with Nature
Stand-up paddling provides a unique way to experience the water, whether it’s calm day or there’s a few whitecaps on the lake. It’s a peaceful and serene way to explore nature, watch wildlife, and soak in beautiful scenery from the middle of Hunter Lake!
Full-Body Workout
SUP is an excellent workout that engages the whole body. Balancing on the board works the core, strengthens the arms, shoulders, and back, and the legs are constantly engaged to maintain balance. It’s a great & easy way to get fit while having tons of fun, without feeling like you’re doing a workout.
Accessible for All Skill Levels
SUP is easy to learn, making it accessible for beginners, but it can also be challenging and exciting for advanced paddlers. You can take it slow and paddle around while sitting, kneeling or standing. You can choose to head out on crystal calm waters or ride the waves or ride the waves on a windy afternoon.
Relaxing and Meditative
There’s something incredibly soothing about the rhythmic motion of paddling. The gentle sway of the board on the water can feel meditative, helping you disconnect from stress and relax. And, as we shared earlier, some campers even choose to do yoga on their paddle boards for added relaxation—and fun!
Social and Fun with Friends
SUP is a fantastic group activity. Campers paddle with cabinmates and other friends, race each other, or go on social paddling adventures. It’s easy to bring along others, beginners and experienced paddlers alike, making it a great way to spend time on the water.
Improves Balance and Focus
Balancing on the board requires focus and concentration, which can improve overall coordination and stability. It’s a great way to slowly meet the challenge while attempting more advanced maneuvers or yoga poses on the board.
Stress Relief and Fun
Being out on the water has a calming effect that’s great for reducing stress. Plus, it’s just plain fun! From the feeling of gliding over the water to the satisfaction of mastering new skills, SUP brings out a sense of playfulness and adventure.
In short, it’s kind of the complete package and fun, adventure, fitness, relaxation, and exploration! And that’s why it’s a big hit at Camp WeHaKee
