Wednesdays @ WeHaKee: Being A WeHaKee Counselor
We welcome you to our new blog feature here in WeHaKee World! Beginning today and returning on selected Wednesdays, we will be featuring topics relavant to our campers, families and staff. The newest addition to our blog will hence forth be known as ‘Wednesdays @ WeHaKee’! We hope you’ll enjoy our contributions to WeHaKee life and invite you to share your suggestions as to topics we can feature in the future. And not to worry – Fridays with Franky and our Sunday Snippets will continue as always!
Having come off our most successful summer to date, we would like to share some of our thougths (along with the thoughts of another) regarding the motivations behind becoming a camp counselor at WeHaKee. It’s not an easy job, so why would anyone choose to sign up for summer of long days and short nights? Well, many a counselor will tell you that despite the challenges, the stress, the exhaustion and yes, the tears they experienced, being a WeHaKee counselor was the most fulfilling and satisfying job they ever had!
If you’ve never experienced an all-girls camp environment, a summer at WeHaKee will open your eyes to the power that being a girl can truly be! As many of you know, being a girl in our current culture is no piece of cake. You’re expected to be smart, but not too smart; to have the perfect body (whatever that is?!?); be assertive, yet submissive… really??; to dress just right; to navigate norms that are so contradictory that failure often becomes the only option! It seems that you’re expected to be everything, but your true self.
Fortunately, a summer at WeHaKee allows you to be precisely who you are. And if you’re not sure who that is exactly, the opportunities to try new things and to meet amazing new people will get you well on your way to finding the real true you. Now, this may sound like we are speaking to potential campers at WeHaKee – well yeah, that’s partially accurate. But this is also the message we want to send to potential WeHaKee camp counselors!
There is no better way to learn than to help others to learn! Being a camp counselor will provide you with countless opportunities to help others experience deep learning while helping you discover all that you have to offer. Not so sure about that? Well, take a moment to check out what this camp counselor had to say about her camp counseling experiences and why they are so much more valuable than any internship out there:
Why You Should Be a Camp Counselor (Instead of an Intern!)
Katie Piscopio, contributor to Her Campus
No matter what career path you may be seeking, a summer camp counseling experience can provide a plethora of chances to acquire and enhance the soft skills and emotional intelligience needed to succeed in work and in life. And if it’s an internship you need, talk with us and we’ll help craft your camp staff experience to meet and exceed the expectations of that internship. Making a difference in the lives of others is the best way to make a difference in your own life. Come on, you know you want to!
Thanks for joing us today. Have a great rest of the week everyone!
