A Safe Place Then And A Safe Place Now
WeHaKee Camp for Girls prides itself on a 90-year history of safe and fulfilling experiences for all girls. In fact, it was safety that was the primary motivating factor for moving WeHaKee from its location along Lake Michigan to the tranquil shores of Hunter Lake in the 1960s. The rapidly changing waters of Lake Michigan’s Green Bay could often produce challenging safety issues for swimmers and boaters. Moving to an inland lake in northwest Wisconsin reduced those challenges significantly!
Safety at WeHaKee is constantly being reviewed and updated to ensure a safe and secure setting for the members of the WeHaKee community. As you can note from this 1962 photo above, our canoeists are not wearing PFD’s (personal flotation devices). Although this was the safety norm at the time, it can be a bit shocking to see what would be considered a serious safety error today!
To enable our ability to maintain and exceed the camping industry standards related to safety and many other aspects of a high-quality camping program, WeHaKee Camp for Girls has been accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) for decades. The accreditation process annually reviews all aspects of the camp program including such things as program development & integrity, staff screening & training, property & facility management, as well as safety and security. Only 25% of the nation’s camps qualify for this recognition and approval.
Safety at camp also includes the social and emotional well-being of all of our participants. Great care and intentional planning are incorporated to help each girl enhance their personal social skills allowing them to not only increase their self-confidence and independence but also to become more responsible, caring and individual members of the community. Add that to our commitment to providing supportive and seamless supervision of our campers and you can see that our community is a positive social and emotionally safe place!
WeHaKee has been successfully caring for girls for 90 years!
