Sunday Snippet: Spaghetti and Meatballs
Welcome to Session 2C! So excited to continue building our camp community with our new campers, as well as the 4-week and 6-week campers! Today marks our first full day of regular activities, and the girls have already made the hike down to the Teepee fire circle for the Welcome Fire! They participated in a swim check, tie-dyed a t-shirt in the art barn, took a camp tour, made a “Cabin Callout,” and then had an afternoon of regular activities yesterday. With all this going on, we rely on our kitchen to provide great meals for the campers to keep their energy up… and they do a great job! There is one meal in particular that is always the same—opening night dinner, the first meal most of the campers will have together.
So why do we have spaghetti every opening night? There are so many camp meals that are super popular that could take its place—chicken nuggets, Chinese food, warm soup and sandwiches, taco bar, and many more!
There is one simple reason behind spaghetti as our debut meal—comfort. We want to be as welcoming as we can, and spaghetti is very easily adapted. Some girls will have plain noodle, some just the red sauce, and some will forgo the noodles altogether for meatballs and a big salad. With something recognizable on the buffet line, dinner is the first step in making camp feel like a home away from home.
This philosophy extends beyond just meals. WeHaKee strives to make girls feel like they can take the camp experience and make it their own. We want each and every camper to know that this is their community and they should feel comfortable and welcomed here.
Hope you are having a wonderful Sunday! See you at camp!
