Sunday Snippet: With A Heavy Heart
Hello Everyone. With a heavy heart, we share sad news of the passing of Dave Hummel. Dave, along with his wife, Jenny, joined our staff team this past summer and worked in our kitchen. Dave passed away on Friday, September 1st. Dave was a cook and Jenny was a baker and assisted throughout the kitchen. Unfortunately, Dave became ill within a couple of weeks and shortly with a non-contagious, yet significant illness. Even though he could no longer continue his own work in the kitchen he encouraged Jenny to continue and she picked up where Dave left off cooking many of our breakfasts and lunches.
Although he only spent a few short weeks at WeHaKee, Dave’s commitment to the spirit and mission of WeHaKee was evident. He frequently checked in with our campers and staff to see what they particularly liked or disliked about the food he offered. And he often conferred with the directors to find the right nutritious offerings that the campers would love. He ran a meticulous kitchen like it was his own home or restaurant. He had a deep desire to satisfy even the most challenging tastebuds!
When Dave had to step away from his beloved position at WeHaKee, Jenny stepped up to ensure that the campers and staff were fed well and with food they enjoyed. Along with her own deep commitment to the WeHaKee community, she channeled Dave’s focus and provided 1500 meals a week without missing a beat.
We cannot thank Jenny and Dave enough for their efforts and commitment to our camp community. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jenny as she moves forward without the love of her life by her side. And we thank God for blessing us with Dave’s joy and energy in providing nutritious offerings for all in our camp community this summer.
