Sunday Snippet: Changing the World One Girl at a Time!
Every Sunday, before your afternoon nap, be sure to check for a post from one of camp’s directors, Bob and Maggie, as they share their insights and camp’s happenings. This week, Bob discusses WeHaKee’s expanding community!
We have a big problem at WeHaKee this summer! Well it’s more like a tall problem… well… not tall enough actually! What I’m really trying to say is that our flagpole does not quite have the height to hold all the flags we need to display this session. You see, at WeHaKee it has long been a tradition to fly the flags that represent all the nations of our campers and staff. And this session we need space for 14 flags – United States, Mexico, France, Australia, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Poland, China, Germany, England and Scotland. Our problem? The flagpole has space for 10 flags. However, through the magic of WeHaKee we have found a way to include all 14!
It’s a nice problem to have as it demonstrates the welcoming and accepting diversity of the WeHaKee community – Worlds Apart, Coming Together! We had our first flag ceremony of 2nd session today and in addition to raising the flags of each of the nations, we also had the chance to listen to the national anthems of each of the nations represented at WeHaKee sung by campers.
As directors of Camp WeHaKee, it is very gratifying and humbling to see girls of many nations, many backgrounds, many faiths, many colors and many cultures come together to form a fun, supportive and accepting community… the moment they arrive. The girls do see the differences they all bring, but what they don’t see (or simply ignore!) are the barriers others often place between those differences. Instead they cherish and embrace the differences helping each girl grow in worldly ways not found anywhere else. Perhaps we should gather the leaders of the world and have them attend camp and the world might become a better, more peaceful place!
For those of you whose daughters are attending WeHaKee right now, thank you for sharing your amazing daughters with us.
