Fridays with Franky: Northwoods Cabin Life
Happy Friday everyone! It’s Franky the camp dog, and with the warm weather approaching, I’ve got a little cabin fever! Not so much to get out of my house, but to get into a new home!
Summer is only a short time away, and I want to live the cabin life again. Sleeping near a lake in the northwoods, waking up to the sounds of the forest around me, and breathing great fresh air!
Does that sound good to you too? If it does, you should come live the cabin live at WeHaKee. So what is cabin life at WeHaKee really like? What can our campers expect to see when they are shown their new camp home?
- Community Space
There are 14 WeHaKee cabins housing 8 campers and 2 counselors each, overlooking Hunter Lake. The 8 campers are in one room together, and are grouped into cabins by age. The cabin assignments are made so each cabin is a mix of new and returning campers from lots of different places! A short walk from your cabin are the great WeHaKee shower houses, cleaned every day!
Living in community is great. It’s like a sleepover, except you get to stay over the next day too! This is great fun, and it also means our campers learn a lot about being a good community member. It’s a great 21st century skill to learn how to live with others!
- Personal Space
Campers have their own set of shelves to keep their stuff. Since you stay for at least 2 weeks, we encourage you to make yourself at home. Campers unpack their suitcases and fill the shelves with their things. Suitcases are stored out of the way for the session, so it doesn’t feel like you are living out of one!
There are 4 bunk-beds in each cabin. Some campers bring their own bedding to make their bed comfortable and cozy. You can also borrow bedding from WeHaKee as an option. We have lots of great sleeping bags, soft sheets, and fluffy pillows.
Campers often like to decorate to make their bunk space their own. Feel free to bring a couple pictures of home to set up, or a favorite stuffed “friend.”
- Counselor Space
Your two counselors stay in the cabin with you, in a separate room divided from the camper space by a curtain. This is the Counselor Porch, or as we like to call it, CP! They are there if you need them, and often will come sit in the middle of the main cabin space with you to play games or tell stories!
- And the best of WeHaKee Camp Life!
Keeping your cabin clean comes with a great prize! Each day the one cabin wins the coveted Golden Dustpan… and that comes with special privileges at meal time… wonder what those could be!?
