Fridays with Franky: A Heartfelt Thank You
Hello everyone, it’s me, Franky the camp dog. There’s been a lot going on this past week and everyone seems to have something to say. While I mostly like to talk about camp and chasing the leaves right now, I think it’s important to talk about what today means.
The men and women who serve the United States in the military work very hard. What they do earns us the privilege of coming to camp, having a nice home, and sleeping soundly at night. It’s important to thank them for their hard work. Not everyone can do the job they do.
Sometimes I like to reflect on all the different things people in this country and around the world like to do. Some people like to run or swim or bike. Some people would rather curl up with a good book and read. Some people like both! I really like running around camp with the girls.
I know it’s easy to imagine our military service people as one kind of person. The reality is they are like us. They like to do different things for fun, have different kinds of families, and worry about different things.
Today we honor our veterans. I hope when you thank them that you see them as someone just like you in many ways, but remember that that are unique and individual just like you. Their greater cause is so vast we forget sometimes that they are human like us (or a dog, like me… can’t forget the K-9s!).
When we fly the flags of all the nations represented at WeHaKee during our flag ceremonies, it always reminds me that we are incredibly privileged to have safe place for girls of all kinds to come together. Thank you to those of you who work so tirelessly to make that happen.
