Fridays with Franky: Friendship in Many Forms
Good morning everyone! If we’ve never been introduced, I’m Franky, the WeHaKee Camp Dog. I love walks through the camp, riding the golf cart, and watching all the campers have the best time at camp. I hope we can meet in person soon, and enjoy camp together!
I’m here today to talk to you about what friendships look like at WeHaKee. Our tagline does say it all… At the Heart of WeHaKee is a relationship!
We even have a whole video about friendships at camp:
So I’m guessing you really want to know: how do campers actually make friends at WeHaKee? And I get it! It’s probably one of the most frequently asked questions that Bob and Maggie and Thatch get at camp fairs or in emails from parents or new campers!
Some are coming with friends from home and want to know if they’ll be able to spend time together. Some are coming without anyone they know for the first time and want to know if they will be included. Some are coming back for another summer in a long line of summers, but they also want to know what new friends they can make, and if their old friends are coming back too!
So here’s what I can tell you! The camp is set up in such a way that you will have opportunities to meet lots of different friends! A WeHaKee day is structured with your relationships in mind. Let me give a few examples:
Cabin Life
The girls in your cabin will be your same age. They will be a mix of new and returning campers. Maybe you came with a friend or relative from home… you do have the opportunity to request to share a cabin with them! If you don’t know anyone before you arrive, don’t worry! You won’t be the only one in your cabin, and that will change very soon!
You will spend Cabin Nights, mealtimes, and resting time with your cabin.
Activity Time
Your activities are decided by you. So that means your schedule is unique to your choices. Here’s another chance to meet different people! They will have the same interest you do in your activity. You may see some of your cabin mates throughout the day too! If you want more time to spend with someone from your activities, plan to catch up at Valley Time, or sign up for an Activity Night together!
All Together Now
The best times are when the whole camp is together! Like Valley Time, for snack and mail! Or in the chapel, for Mass or Evening Prayer. Or our Special Events or Showcase! There’s plenty of time to feel the warmth and community of the entire camp!
Leave me a comment about how you met your best friend, or your favorite camp friendship memory! And let me know if you have any more questions about making friends at camp… I love answering them!
See you at camp!
