Fridays with Franky: Captain of the Pontoon
Hi there! It’s Franky, the captain of the WeHaKee Camp pontoon boat! Or at least that’s what it feels like to me… Last night I got asked on another cabin night trip on the pontoon. This time, the girls wanted to have spa night on the pontoon! So they got my skipper, Bob the camp director, to drive them out into the lake for some good old-fashioned sea(lake)-side cabin bonding.
Last Sunday Snippet talked about what happens on Hunter Lake, but as a frequent witness to the pontoon boat’s launching, I know we could just talk about my favorite watercraft for a while. Other than pontoon spa nights, I have been captaining for many a pontoon tea party or pontoon costume party. And it doesn’t just end with cabin nights! The girls will use the pontoon to experience the lake in many different ways.
Down the larger of the two channels off of one side of Hunter Lake (the “Discovery Channel”), there is a bald eagle’s nest that has been there for many years. Girls also might spy the eagle flying overhead as the pontoon putters across the lake. There are turtles to watch out for, and the occasional jump of a fish.
Fishing class also takes the pontoon out in the morning. Though it’s hard to catch a fish with a gaggle of girls on a boat, but they really try to catch the muskies and other fish native to northern Wisconsin and learn the proper catch-and-release techniques.
I hope you or your camper will have the chance to visit me on one of my pontoon rides! See you at camp!
