Fridays with Franky: Cabin Callouts!
Hi there! Franky the camp dog here, and I am so excited to have Session 2 underway and to have record numbers of campers here at WeHaKee. After all the excitement with the buses and cars pulling into camp on Wednesday, these young ladies wasted no time in getting to know each other and camp! We had 2 activity periods already, and I couldn’t believe all the fun being had. I knew I had to check it out for myself. I don’t usually go down to the fire circle, but at last night’s Welcome Fire, I went just to have the opportunity to meet each and every one of these extraordinary campers!
At WeHaKee Welcome Fires, each cabin comes up with a “Cabin Callout.” This is a skit, chant, song, or any other creative means the cabin can come up with to introduce themselves to the whole camp! Each cabin takes it in turns to go in front of everyone at the fire to say their names in a fun way.
Last night there were cabins singing parodies of popular songs on the radio, doing crazy clapping and dancing chants, and even a couple skits. I learned so many names and saw so many different callouts. It just goes to show that the campers at WeHaKee are wonderfully diverse and creative! We also sang some great camp songs, and heard a little bit more about some of the special events coming up for this session.
Evening prayer is also held at the campfire circle after the Welcome Fire. It’s just a great place to gather to get to know each other and be grateful for the nature around us at camp.
Stay tuned for more from me about Session 2! I’m sure I’ll be seeing a lot more of these wonderful campers all around camp… and now I know their names!
