Fridays with Franky: Anatomy of a WeHaKee Camp Counselor
Hello everyone! Franky the WeHaKee camp dog here!
The WeHaKee Leadership Team are almost done with the process of recruiting, interviewing, and hiring the last few candidates for our amazing summer 2018 staff. Every summer is a new mix of staff, kind of like every summer is a new combination of campers. And just like our campers, WeHaKee staff come from all over the country and all over the world.
We have staff who came to WeHaKee as campers, and staff who never went to summer camp in the childhood. We have staff returning from previous summers at WeHaKee, and staff who have worked in a variety of summer jobs before. There are staff who know a lot about us, from friends or siblings, and staff who meet us for the first time at a recruiting fair or find us online.
So with all these variables in life and experience amongst the staff, what it is that we look for when hiring? What does it really take to be an amazing WeHaKee summer staff member?
- Passion. WeHaKee campers have a lot of choice in their day. Their activities are their choice, based on both interest and previous experience. So we need staff members who have hobbies and interests that they love and want to share. Did you play a sport in college? Have a handicraft hobby that you love? A pastime you want to share? WeHaKee is the place!
- Willingness to learn. So you have things you know how to do… Are you ready to learn how to best share yourself and your interests with campers? Can you see yourself supporting their passions? It does sounds a bit more daunting than pursuing your own interests and happiness, but our comprehensive staff training will get you headed in the right direction
- Adaptability. Be ready to handle a couple changes in plan. Don’t fear–at WeHaKee there is a built-in support system when things don’t go exactly the way you thought they would. So if you can bring some adaptability, we will supply you with oodles more! Put that on your CV!
- An Open-Mind. Like I said before, our campers and staff all come from very different lives to join in the WeHaKee community. We need our staff to help join together all these wonderful people by being willing to hear another person’s story!
There are lots more skills and attitudes we love to see in our staff! We want to see what you can contribute to our community. If you will be 18 years old by June 2018 and can see yourself working at WeHaKee, apply online today!
See you at camp!
